INTERNATIONAL VACANCIES
The African Regional Institute for Geospatial Information Science and Technology (AFRIGIST), formerly known as the Regional Centre for Training in Aerospace Surveys (RECTAS) is an intergovernmental organization established under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) at Ile-Ife, Nigeria in 1972 for capacity building in Geospatial Information Science and Technology, and related fields (www.afrigist.org).
AFRIGIST hereby invites applications from experienced, resourceful, trustworthy, result-oriented, computer-literate, and suitably qualified candidates for the following vacant positions:
(A) LECTURESHIP POSITIONS
The following Lectureship positions with their respective minimum qualifications, publications, experience, etc, are vacant in the following Departments and Units:
(a) Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing
(b) Geographic Information Science
(c) Cartography
(d) Geodetic Science
(e) Hydrography and Marine Science
Job Title:

Qualifications:
- Assistant Lecturer (RP1): Candidates should possess a Masters’ degree in any of the following disciplines: Surveying and Geoinformatics, Geomatics Engineering, Geodesy and Navigation, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Hydrography, Geosciences, Oceanography & Marine Science, Cartography and Geographic Information Science (GIS) from reputable University or accredited Institution of higher learning.
- Lecturer II (RP2): Candidates should possess a good first and second degree in Surveying and Geoinformatics, Geomatics Engineering, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Cartography, Geosciences, or GIS plus PhD in the same area from a reputable University or accredited Institution of higher learning. Candidates must have at least four (4) years of teaching and research experience respectively in a university or comparable institution of higher learning.
- Lecturer I (RP3): Candidates should possess a good first and second degree in Surveying and Geoinformatics, Geomatics Engineering, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Cartography, Geosciences, or GIS plus PhD in the same areas from a reputable University or accredited Institution of higher learning. Candidates must have at least seven (7) years of teaching and research experiences respectively in a university or comparable institution of
higher learning. - Senior Lecturer (RP4): Candidates should possess a good first and second degree in Surveying and Geoinformatics, Geomatics Engineering, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Cartography, Geosciences, or GIS plus PhD in the same areas from reputable University or accredited Institution of higher learning. Candidates must have at least ten (10) years of teaching and research experiences respectively in a university or comparable institution of higher learning.
GENERAL:
- Preference will be given to applicants from AFRIGIST Member States.
- Each position is open to Anglophone and Francophone applicants.
- Candidate must be able to teach courses at the postgraduate level with evidence of practical skills and competence.
- Evidence of scholarly publications in reputable journals is required in addition to the ability to supervise students in areas of expertise.
- Candidate with professional registration/certification is an added advantage.
- Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing Department
Candidates applying for the positions in this department are expected to:
– Possess a PhD in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and related discipline
– Be proficient in digital image processing and analysis, UAS, RADAR, LASER and LIDAR;
and
– Demonstrate expertise and research skills applying Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software (ArcGIS, ILWIS, QGIS, ERDAS IMAGINE, IMAGINE Photogrammetry, ENVI, ER-Mapper, PCI-Geomatica, Pix-4D, etc.). - Department of Geographic Information Science
Candidates applying for the positions in this department are expected to:
– Possess a PhD in Geoinformatics or Geographic Information Science & Applications in Meteorology/Climatology, Hydrology, Geosciences, Biodiversity or other related disciplines
– Be proficient in Computer Programming (Python, R or Java), Geostatistics, Spatial Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning (ML) and Deep Learning
– Demonstrate expertise and research skills applying Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software (ArcGIS, QGIS, ILWIS, ERDAS IMAGINE, ENVI, OpenGIS, SQL, Google Earth Engine, etc.). - Department of Cartography
Candidates applying for the positions in this department are expected to:
– Possess a PhD in Geospatial Information Science, Cartography and Map Production or a related discipline
– Be proficient in Computer Programming (Python, R or Java), Geostatistics, Machine learning (ML) & Deep Learning, Digital mapping, Web Mapping and Internet GIS
– Demonstrate expertise and research skills applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Cartography software (ArcGIS, QGIS, MAP PUBLISHER, MAPINFO, Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD, etc.).
– Demonstrate expertise and research skills in Spatial Data Science and Artificial Intelligence - Department of Geodetic Science:
Candidates applying for the positions in this department are expected to:

- Possess a PhD in Surveying and Geoinformatics (Geomatics, Geodesy and Navigation Physical Geodesy, Geometric Geodesy, Space & Satellite Geodesy, Applied Remote Sensing/Environmental Geodesy, etc.) with proficiency in:
- GNSS CORS Management & RINEX data processing and modelling with software such as Bernese, AutoGipsy, GAMIT/GLOBK, AUSPOS, CSRS-PPP, SCOUT, Leica Geo-Office, Trimble Solutions-TTC, TGO, etc.,
- GNSS atmospheric studies and space weather with data science/AI using software such as Matlab, Python, R, OpenAI, etc.
- Demonstrate expertise and research skills applying geodetic surveying software (Bernese GNSS, ArcGIS, ILWIS, QGIS, ERDAS IMAGINE, ENVI, AutoCAD, etc.).
- Possess practical skills in the usage of geodetic equipment such as GNSS Receivers, Total Station, geodetic level, etc.
- Possess a PhD in Surveying and Geoinformatics (Geomatics, Geodesy and Navigation Physical Geodesy, Geometric Geodesy, Space & Satellite Geodesy, Applied Remote Sensing/Environmental Geodesy, etc.) with proficiency in:
5. Hydrography and Marine Science
Candidates applying for the positions in this department are expected to:

- Possess a PhD in Surveying and Geoinformatics (Hydrography, Marine Geodesy, Geodesy and Navigation, Space & Satellite Geodesy, Applied Ocean Remote Sensing/Coastal Engineering, Marine Resources, etc.) with skills and experiences in:
- Underwater Sensors and Data Processing, Nautical Science, Meteorology, Oceanography, Positioning and Navigation, LiDAR and Remote Sensing, Survey Operations and Applications, Water Levels and Flow, Hydrographic Data Acquisition and Processing, Management of Hydrographic Data, and related Legal Issues/UNCLOS, etc.
- Marine Geospatial Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
- CAT-A IHO certification will be an added advantage.
- Possess a PhD in Surveying and Geoinformatics (Hydrography, Marine Geodesy, Geodesy and Navigation, Space & Satellite Geodesy, Applied Ocean Remote Sensing/Coastal Engineering, Marine Resources, etc.) with skills and experiences in:

In addition to stating the names and addresses of the three (3) referees, applicants should request that their referees forward confidential reports on them directly to the Executive Director (ed@afrigist.org). One of the referees must be the applicant’s boss at the present or last place of work.
The cover letter should set out how the qualifications and experience match the requirements of the position.
