Professional Master in Geo-spatial Information Production & Management
The academic programme is be referred to as Professional Masters (PM) in Geo-information Production and Management and is been offered in twelve (12) months. The programme is hosted in the Department of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.
Programme Philosophy
The PM degree programme in Geo-information Production and Management is designed to train highly skilled manpower in the techniques and technology of geospatial information. The Programme is designed to extend the geo-information skills to professionals.
Programme Objectives
The objectives of the PM GPM is to achieve competences in:
- The use of integrated geo-information production technology (data acquisition, information extraction, information presentation, databases and spatial information systems);
- The operational management of geo-information production systems (design, planning, execution of geoinformation projects and quality control );
- The application of geo-information science to diverse areas such as environment, agriculture and forestry, natural resources, etc
Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to contribute to the design and implementation of geo-information production projects and quality control systems in the following areas:
- Design and use of integrated geo-information production systems for selected applications;
- Dnalysis of information requirements and definition of products/services and system specifications;
- Evaluation of data sources, production systems and products/services performances;
- Identification of production constraints; and
- Design and implementation of quality assurance/control systems.
Justification for the Programme
The fields of Geo-information science and technologies are rapidly expanding and embrace many sectors of the economy including science, arts and humanities. The users of geo-information products are also expanding and cover all fields of specialization.
Proper understanding of the availability and distribution of resources can be achieved through Geo-information science and technology thus enhancing the exploitation of these resources for the economic benefit of the Africa’s citizens.
On the other hand, natural and man-induced disasters like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides and tsunamis have been known to wreak havoc on human habitation, particularly in Africa where there is paucity of knowledge in strategies for their management. Therefore, an understanding of such occurrences and their spatial distribution will enable their proper.
Therefore, developing skills in Geo-information technologies and production and management is very critical to Africa’s developments.

To be eligible for admission into the PM programme, applicants should have:
- a good honors Degree from a recognized university or institution in cognate disciplines such as Engineering, Geo-sciences, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities and Law
- RECTAS’s Technologist Diploma with very good grade (i.e 70 % average) or Higher National Diploma (HND) with a minimum of Upper credit in cognate disciplines such as Engineering, Geo-sciences, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities and Law.
- In addition, candidates are expected to posses 5 credits passes at GCE/OL or equivalent including English Language and Mathematics.
Programme Duration
The programme is Full Time, of the duration is 12 months.
Graduation Requirements
To be eligible for the award of PM degree, students must have:
- a minimum of 50 % pass in all courses and satisfactory pass in General study courses;
- must have accumulated at least 48 course units;
- successfully passed two seminars;
- successfully completed and defended a research project in an oral examination
- fulfilled all other conditions as prescribed by the Academic Board
METHOD OF APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION
Candidates must submit duly completed application forms to the Centre not later than the 30th of May of the intended year of study for courses beginning in October of Every year
Successful applicants should report at the centre with the following documents:
- Certificate of medical fitness from a recognised Public health Institution;
- Statement of support by candidate’s financial sponsor/Employer (where applicable)
- 2 passport-size photographs of the candidate; and
- Photocopies of degrees, diplomas, certificates and other credentials including transcript of academic records, original copy of which shall be presented on arrival at the Centre.
Private Candidates or Candidates Sponsored by Non-Member States
All private application forms (including non-residential courses), duly completed and signed by applicants, should be returned directly to the Executive Director of the Centre.
Candidates Sponsored by Member States
In order to be eligible for AFRIGIST fellowship a prospective candidate is encouraged to obtain nomination from his/her country’s Respective member in AFRIGIST Governing Council (Benin, Burkina, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal). Fellowship covers tuition accommodation, feeding stipend and other allowances.
Candidates can also seek support, scholarships and fellowships from national and international organisations such as State Governments and Departments, Ministries and agencies, Educational Trust Fund (ETF), Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF), Shell or other oil companies, UNDP, DFID, IFRA, UNESCO, Ford Foundation, etc.
